Xi Jinping Holds Group Meeting with Incumbent and Incoming Members of the BFA Board of Directors
2018-04-17 18:10

On April 11, 2018, President Xi Jinping held a group meeting with the incumbent and incoming members of the Board of Directors of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) at Boao State Guesthouse in Hainan Province.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the BFA was established after the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which reflected the consensus of Asian countries on working hand in hand to tackle challenges, and conformed to the need for integrated development of the regional economy. Since its establishment 17 years ago, with a focus on Asia and a global perspective, the BFA has played an important role in building consensus in Asia, encouraging cooperation in Asia and building a community with a shared future for Asia. In-depth discussions were conducted at this year's annual conference centering on the theme of "An Open and Innovative Asia for a World of Greater Prosperity". All the attendees agree that under the situation that the world is undergoing a new round of major development and profound readjustment, all parties should comply with the trend of the times, and promote change and innovation. All the attendees believe that facing the insufficient driving force for economic growth and the challenges arising from trade protectionism, all parties should adhere to openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation. All the attendees stand ready to make concerted efforts and go forward hand in hand to create a better future for Asia and the world. Politicians of all countries should make plans for their future generations and the long-term development.

Xi Jinping stressed that one of the important inspirations of China's experience in reform and opening up over the past four decades is that China cannot develop itself without the rest of the world, and the development of the world also needs China. Through reform and opening up, China has realized its own development and created the Chinese miracle. Meanwhile, China has also contributed to world progress through its own development. China will continue unswervingly following the path of peaceful development, pursuing the opening-up strategy featuring mutual benefit and win-win results, and pushing forward the building of a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation; China will promote coordination and cooperation with other major countries, develop good-neighborly and friendly relations with neighboring countries, take a more active part in global governance, and work hand in hand with various countries in tackling challenges more effectively; China will closely link its own future and destiny with those of the people around the world, and will not only seek happiness for the Chinese people, but also strive for the cause of human progress. China will further expand cooperation pattern, push forward the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, and build a clean and beautiful world with everlasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness and inclusiveness; China will continuously promote the "Belt and Road" construction, adhere to extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, forge a new platform for international cooperation, and add new impetus to common development, so as to make the "Belt and Road" benefit more countries and people.

Xi Jinping stressed that as the host country of the BFA, China will provide broader development space for the forum, and also hopes that the forum will continue paying attention to and supporting China's development, and playing a positive role in promoting common prosperity for China and the world. The first is to focus on Asia and serve Asia. The forum should build consensus in Asia, make the voice of Asia heard, and put forward Asian schemes, thus elevating more Asian proposals into international consensus and actions and continuously improving Asia's global influence. The second is to have the world in mind and be open and inclusive. The forum should derive development impetus from the world, integrate the achievements of Eastern and Western civilizations, further push forward "going global" strategy, strengthen the building of global network of partnerships and constantly expand circle of friends. The third is to highlight characteristics and forge bright spots. The forum should promote people from all walks of life to conduct candid exchanges and pool wisdom, so as to provide the governments and enterprises of various countries with intellectual support. The forum should propose more "Boao schemes" regarding issues primarily concerned by the international community.

Incumbent Director-General of the BFA Yasuo Fukuda, incoming Director-General of the BFA Ban Ki-moon, incumbent Member of the BFA Board of Directors and former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz of Pakistan, former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin of France, incoming Member of the BFA Board of Directors and former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines, and former Prime Minister Romano Prodi of Italy successively delivered speeches. They expressed that President Xi Jinping's keynote speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the annual conference yesterday was very wonderful, admirable and touching in that it depicted China's development direction, announced major measures for opening up, and was full of the spirit of reform. Delivered on the occasion when globalization and multilateralism are facing challenges, the speech is of far-reaching significance. It has injected new and robust vitality into the development of world economy, pointed out for people the right direction in which the world should follow, and served as a correct answer offered at the critical moment. That is China is committed to following the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, to reform and opening up, and to sustainable, high-quality and innovative development, which boosted the world's confidence in China's greater success. China's success will exert far-reaching influence, bring prosperity to Asia and the world, as well as set a model for other countries in the world. China has become an important engine of global economy, and played an important and constructive role in international affairs including tackling climate change. Various parties of the international community should do as China does to follow the path of reform, opening up, innovation and development, and not to take the road of retrogression characterized by seclusion, rigidness, protectionism and unilateralism. The international community should jointly build a community with a shared future for Asia and for mankind at large. The forum is willing to make its own efforts in this regard.

Prior to the meeting, Xi Jinping posed for group photos with incumbent and incoming Director-Generals, Deputy Director-Generals and Secretary-Generals of the BFA.

Ding Xuexiang, Liu He, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
